The "Leucate plongée" dive center.

The centre has a reception area where you can report your arrival. The centre has a shower area where you can rinse off after your dive. Please note that shower gel is not available.

You have a changing room at your disposal. The men's area is opposite you as you enter, while the ladies' area is on your right, at the back.

Once you have changed into your swimming costume, you can go to the equipment room where your instructors will give you a wetsuit and a pair of flippers. Your mask will be given to you on the boat.

Equipping yourself for your initiation

When you put on your wetsuit, the instructor will tell you whether the zip should be positioned on your stomach or on your back.

To make sure the fins supplied fit you, you need to put them on. With the ball of your foot on the ground, lift your heel. If the fin sticks to your heel, you're done! The fin is correctly fitted. On the other hand, if the heel comes off or if you feel that your heel is not held in place, don't hesitate to return to your instructors at the equipment area, who will change your pair of fins.

Presentation of your equipment.

Finally, the diving suit. This consists of a bottle, a tank, into which air has been compressed, packed many times. This is air, not oxygen. The bottle is filled with the air we are all breathing together at the moment. The tank is connected to the jacket by a flexible hose.

The jacket is inflated by the air injected through this hose, and deflated by the use of purges. Can you hear the noise the jacket makes as it inflates and deflates? This is completely normal and you will hear these noises during your underwater initiation. You don't have to touch the system that inflates your jacket - your instructor will take care of this aspect of the dive. The lifejacket will be fitted to your back by your instructor once you've climbed down the boat's ladder and are in the water. The hose that allows the waistcoat to inflate is connected to the regulator that will be our source of air during the dive.

The regulator consists of a mouthpiece and a canister. The mouthpiece is placed in the mouth. People who have already used a snorkel will recognise this shape of mouthpiece. Once in the mouth, the teeth rest on the mouthpiece. The teeth are positioned rather than clamped. Your lips will seal around the mouthpiece. Once again, there's no need to force your lips closed, just let your body do it naturally.

When you have your regulator in your mouth after your instructor has finished fitting you out, we will ask you not to remove the regulator. From then on it will no longer be possible to talk to each other, so we're going to have to adopt a communication protocol. So let's take a look at the signs we'll be using to talk to each other underwater.

Communication while diving

The first of these signs, and just as much a question as an answer, is the famous ‘OK’ sign, "Are you OK?

What if something isn't ‘OK’? In this case, we'll make the ‘it's not OK’ sign by pointing to the element that's causing us problems. It could be our fin, the water in the mask, our ears etc. We'll look at these things together when we talk about what to do underwater. In the meantime, remember this sign, which is made by putting your hand flat in front of you and rotating it.

During the dive, if you wish to ascend, you must make the following sign:

En route pour l’aventure.
